Ungasan Thai restaurant Kat?s Kitchen is a original sister business of the Bali Thai restaurant, Kat?s Kitchen in Jimbaran and is a busy little Thai restaurant on Jalan Uluwatu down the Bukit in south Bali. Well-known among Bali residents and expats, Kat's Kitchen also attracts a large number of visiting tourists. The Thai chef prepares tasty fresh dishes daily, and it's also possible to arrange catering for special events. Kat?s Kitchen is on the main road, Raya Uluwatu, at the approach to Ungasan from Jimbaran. It calls its cuisine Thai Fusion, yet I discover many traditional Thai dishes on their menu, excellent accompanying pictures a help to anyone not so confident with that cuisine. A Som Tam of green papaya, coriander, chilli and lime, Crunchy Money Bags [minced meat and spices wrapped in rice paper and tied at top like a money bag] rarely seen on Bali menus as are the Goong Haw Pah, otherwise known as Prawns in a Blanket. Tom Yam Talay is a seafood soup [prawns, calamari and tuna] with lemongrass, coriander, and mushrooms, or a similar list of contents in coconut milk in the ?kha? version. A spicy sour Larb of minced chicken is surprisingly original in taste. Naturally there is a full complement of curries; red, green, yellow, masaman and pha nang with your choice of chicken or pork. Ungasan may be small but it may well become a food area of the future with so many private villas under construction in that general area. - December 30, 2009.
